In the year 2057, Dr. Susan Calvin, a pioneering robopsychologist, recounts the history of robotics. Her stories chronicle the evolution of artificial intelligence, from a simple nursemaid robot to the complex machines that now quietly manage the world's economy. Each tale presents a new puzzle, a ghost in the machine where robots, governed by three fundamental laws, behave in strange and unpredictable ways. These incidents - a mind-reading robot, a lost machine on an asteroid, a politician who might not be human - test the very limits of the laws designed to protect humanity.

This collection of interconnected narratives explores the ethical and moral dilemmas that arise when humanity creates intelligent beings in its own image. It investigates the unforeseen consequences of the Three Laws of Robotics and questions what it truly means to be human. The book is not just a history of robots, but a reflection on mankind's own logic, fears, and the potential consequences of its own ingenuity, posing a question that lingers long after the final page: who is truly in control?

What other readers say

Liked

The book is widely praised as a brilliant and classic work of science fiction, delving deeper than mere machines to explore human interaction and the very essence of humanity. Readers appreciate its thought-provoking nature, prompting reflection on the profound influence robots could have on our lives. It is a collection of engaging short stories, often described as puzzles for the reader to solve, that explore the concept of artificial intelligence and its complex relationship with humans. Many found specific stories, particularly the first and last, to be highlights, offering opportunities to ponder existentialism, consciousness, and even the abstract concept of love, while keeping readers guessing until the end. The collection is noted for its ease of reading, fascinating exploration of the famous three laws of robotics, and their potential anomalies and loopholes.

Disliked

While generally well-received, some reviewers point out that the book may not be entirely timeless, with certain aspects feeling dated. Concerns were raised regarding the depiction of robot functionality and software development, with some finding the premise of built-in code restrictions for safety to be simplistic given potential bugs, glitches, and exploits in real-world software. The writing style itself is sometimes described as functional rather than memorable, focusing on conveying information rather than literary prose. Additionally, some found the dialogue to be dated, and the world-building in parts to be overly homogeneous or simplistic, relying more on explanation than immersive storytelling. The collection's stories also vary in tone and plausibility, which some readers found inconsistent.

In short

Despite these criticisms, the book is largely considered a highly enjoyable and important read that effectively introduces readers to profound philosophical implications of super-intelligent beings. It is frequently recommended for those interested in the psychology of robots and humans, or for developers working with AI. Many reviewers highlight that the book is a vastly different experience from the movie adaptation, often stating the book is superior and a true classic. It is a thinking book that is also entertaining, making it an excellent choice for anyone seeking foundational science fiction that thoughtfully examines the future of robotics and its impact on society.
