Δυσφορεί η νύχτα Marieke Lucas Rijneveld ; μετάφραση Άγγελος Αγγελίδης - Μαρία Αγγελίδου

The Discomfort of Evening is widely lauded for its exceptional literary quality, with reviewers frequently praising the author's poetic, vivid, and masterfully controlled prose. Many highlight the compelling and immersive nature of the child narrator, Jas, whose unique perspective powerfully conveys the story's grim and claustrophobic atmosphere. The novel is celebrated for its unflinching and profound exploration of grief, trauma, and the dark complexities of adolescence, delving into difficult subjects with remarkable clarity and depth. Despite the bleak subject matter, some readers found the writing beautiful, leading to a strong emotional impact and a sense of being deeply moved or overwhelmed. Its literary merit is further underscored by its recognition as the winner of the International Booker Prize 2020.

Conversely, a significant number of readers found the novel intensely challenging, disturbing, and often gratuitous. The narrative includes graphic descriptions of animal cruelty, self-harm, and explicit sexual experimentation among minors, which many reviewers deemed vile and unnecessarily explicit. Critics also noted a pervasive sense of grimness and repetition, particularly concerning bodily functions and other unpleasant imagery, which caused the reading experience to become exhausting or even boring for some. Additionally, the first-person, present-tense narration from a child protagonist was questioned by a few as unconvincing or a "nasty trick" given the mature themes explored. These elements led a considerable portion of readers to feel profound discomfort, disappointment, or even outright hatred for the book, making it a difficult read to complete.

Ultimately, The Discomfort of Evening stands as a powerful and impressive, yet deeply polarizing, work of literature. While its artistic merit and courageous willingness to confront difficult realities are widely acknowledged, its explicit and often unsettling content makes it unsuitable for a broad audience. It is highly recommended for readers who appreciate challenging, transgressive literature that pushes boundaries and explores the darkest aspects of the human experience, particularly themes of grief, trauma, and psychological unraveling. However, potential readers should be aware of numerous trigger warnings and be prepared for an intense, unsparing, and often discomfiting journey that may not resonate positively with everyone.
