As they venture through a landscape both familiar and forgotten, their quest for their lost child becomes a deeper search for the truth of their shared history and the buried secrets of a fractured land. This poignant tale explores the complex nature of memory itself, questioning whether forgetting brings peace or merely postpones an inevitable reckoning.

Their journey began with a disquieting encounter: a boatman, a silent ferryman of souls, and a desolate old woman who had been cruelly separated from her husband by this very boatman. This chilling tale planted a seed of fear in Beatrice's heart, a dread that the mist, and perhaps their journey, might unravel the delicate threads of their own love. Soon, they arrived at a Saxon village, a place simmering with suspicion after an ogre attack. There, they met Wistan, a Saxon warrior, fierce and watchful, on a mission of his own, and Edwin, a young boy bearing a mysterious wound, believed to be an ogre-bite. Wistan, taking Edwin under his wing, agreed to accompany Axl and Beatrice, their paths converging towards a monastery where a wise monk might offer guidance on Beatrice's ailing side and the perplexing mist that afflicted everyone.
The monastery, however, proved to be less a sanctuary and more a nexus of hidden truths. Here, they encountered the legendary Sir Gawain, King Arthur's nephew, an ancient knight still clinging to a faded chivalric code, tasked long ago with slaying the she-dragon Querig. It was here, too, that Wistan revealed his true purpose: he was sent by the Saxon king to kill Querig, fearing she was a weapon held by the Britons. Whispers of corruption among the monks and the uneasy alliance between their disparate group filled the air. As they navigated the monastery's labyrinthine passages, Axl and Beatrice began to glimpse fleeting images, fragments of memories that danced at the edges of their consciousness, unsettling and vague.
The group's uneasy truce shattered. Wistan, a master tactician, trapped and slew Briton soldiers within the monastery walls. Sir Gawain, riding alone for a time, found his own memories returning, a devastating recollection of King Arthur's brutal orders: the massacre of Saxon villages, a betrayal of the very peace Axl, then Arthur's envoy, had painstakingly brokered. Querig, it was revealed, was not merely a beast, but the source of the mist itself, her breath casting a spell of oblivion to bury the atrocities of the past, to allow Saxons and Britons to live in a false peace, oblivious to the horrific acts committed by Arthur's hand.
Axl and Beatrice, now separated from Wistan and Edwin, continued their journey, their destination still their son's village, though the urgency of their quest had shifted. The mist, however, was beginning to thin, and with each step, more memories surfaced, often painful and confronting. They recalled arguments, resentments, and a profound sadness that had led their son to leave them, a sorrow exacerbated by Axl's refusal to take Beatrice to their son's grave after he died of the plague. The weight of these rediscovered memories threatened to crush the fragile love they had nurtured in their forgotten years.
Finally, after a perilous journey fraught with encounters with pixies and a poisoned goat meant for Querig, Axl and Beatrice found themselves at the edge of an island, where the enigmatic boatman awaited. Beatrice, frail and weary, was ready to make the crossing, but the boatman insisted on a test: only couples whose love was true and unwavering could cross together. As their memories fully returned, the boatman uncovered the deep wounds of their past, the infidelity, the bitter arguments, the son's tragic departure and death. Axl, confronted with the full, raw truth of their history, hesitated, fearing that the return of these painful memories would shatter the love they had rebuilt in the mist.
He pleaded with the boatman, desperate to keep Beatrice with him, to preserve the tender affection that had blossomed in their forgetfulness. But Beatrice, with a quiet strength, affirmed her willingness to remember all of it - the good and the bad - for it was the entirety of their shared life. Yet, in the end, the boatman, seeing the lingering doubt and resentment in Axl's heart, deemed him unworthy to cross with her. With a heavy heart, Axl watched as Beatrice, his one true love, was ferried away to the island alone, leaving him on the shore, burdened by the clarity of a past he had once wished to forget, and uncertain if the boatman would ever return for him.

Many reviewers praise The Buried Giant for its distinctive and ambitious exploration of profound themes. It is seen as a subtle and melancholy reflection on memory, forgetfulness, love, and loss, both on an individual and national scale. Readers appreciate the author's masterful prose, craftsmanship, and ability to create a spellbinding, hauntingly evocative atmosphere. The narrative is described as an intelligent fable that gradually yields its secrets, offering rich rewards to those who engage with its peculiar rhythms. Despite its setting in a post-Arthurian Britain populated with mythical creatures, many note that the fantasy elements serve primarily as a vehicle for philosophical musings, literary allusions, and an in-depth look at universal human experiences. It is considered a unique departure for the author, admired by those who appreciate writers taking bold steps outside their comfort zones.
Conversely, a significant portion of readers found the book to be a tedious and plodding read, criticizing its repetitive dialogue and slow pace. Many struggled to connect emotionally with the characters, describing them as lacking personality or being overly formal and detached. The stylistic choice of constant repetition, particularly in dialogue, was a frequent point of frustration, leading some to feel bored or to skim sections. Some long-time fans expressed disappointment, feeling the novel lacked the author's usual depth, wit, or engaging narrative structure, and that the fantasy elements felt underdeveloped or merely a "guise." The ending was perceived by some as anticlimactic, failing to provide satisfying answers after a lengthy journey. Several reviewers also found the world-building sparse for a fantasy novel, and certain character portrayals were not well-received.
Ultimately, The Buried Giant is a divisive novel that invites varied interpretations, often described as an allegorical meditation rather than a traditional fantasy adventure. Its core strength lies in its intellectual engagement with complex questions about the cost of memory and the nature of peace and truth. This book is best suited for readers who appreciate deeply thematic and philosophical literary fiction, particularly those willing to engage with a narrative that prioritizes symbolism and atmosphere over fast-paced plot or explicit answers. It may appeal to those interested in fables and parables, and to existing fans of the author who are open to his stylistic experimentation, rather than those expecting a conventional genre experience or direct comparisons to his earlier works.
