In a verdant valley, three hungry billy goats, all named Gruff, found themselves gazing longingly at a distant meadow. The grass in their own field had grown sparse and brown, but across a rushing stream, a field of lush, sweet, green blades beckoned. The only way to reach this promised land was over a rickety old bridge.

As the smallest Billy Goat Gruff began to trip-trap across the wooden planks, a fearsome voice rumbled from beneath. "Who's that trip-trapping over my bridge?" bellowed the hideous troll, his eyes glinting with malice. The little goat, trembling, squeaked, "Oh, it is only I, the littlest Billy Goat Gruff. I am going to the meadow to make myself fat." The troll, however, declared his intention to gobble him up.

"Oh, please, Mr. Troll, don't eat me!" pleaded the tiny goat. "I'm much too small to fill you up. Just wait a little while for my brother, the middle-sized Billy Goat Gruff. He is much bigger and would make a far better meal for you." The greedy troll, always eager for a larger feast, considered this. "Very well," he grumbled, "be off with you!" And so, the littlest Billy Goat Gruff scampered across the bridge to the sweet grass on the other side.

Soon after, the middle-sized Billy Goat Gruff stepped onto the bridge. His hooves made a slightly louder trip-trap, which again roused the grumpy troll. "Who's that trip-trapping over my bridge?" roared the troll, his voice shaking the very planks. The middle goat, though braver than his brother, still felt a shiver of fear. He explained his journey to the meadow.

Again, the troll threatened to devour him. "Oh, no, Mr. Troll, you don't want me!" cried the middle Billy Goat Gruff. "I'm only a medium-sized goat. My older brother, the biggest Billy Goat Gruff, is coming next, and he is much, much larger and tastier than I am. Wait for him!" The troll, his stomach rumbling at the thought of an even grander meal, agreed once more. He let the middle goat pass, who then joined his little brother, feasting happily.

Finally, the biggest Billy Goat Gruff approached the bridge. His heavy hooves made a mighty TRIP-TRAP, TRIP-TRAP, shaking the entire structure. The troll, his patience worn thin and his hunger immense, burst forth from under the bridge, a truly terrifying sight. "NOW, who's that trip-trapping over MY bridge?" he roared, his voice like thunder. "It is I, the Biggest Billy Goat Gruff!" declared the goat, his voice strong and unafraid.

"Well, I'm going to gobble you up!" snarled the troll, lunging forward. But this time, the troll had met his match. The biggest Billy Goat Gruff lowered his head, his powerful horns gleaming. With a mighty charge, he butted the troll, tossing the monstrous creature high into the air. The troll flew over the side of the bridge and plunged with a great splash into the rushing stream below, never to be seen again.

With the troll vanquished, the biggest Billy Goat Gruff crossed the bridge and joined his brothers in the lush, green meadow. From that day forward, the bridge was safe for all to cross, and the three Billy Goats Gruff lived happily, grazing on the abundant, sweet grass, free from any lurking danger.
