Au Nom Du Coeur

Many readers found this book to be a compelling and engaging read, often describing it as difficult to put down despite any frustrations. Reviewers appreciated the vivid descriptions of settings like New York and San Francisco, which helped to immerse them in the story. The novel is noted for its ability to evoke strong emotions, offering a rollercoaster experience with moments of love, passion, and pain. Some readers also enjoyed the inclusion of engaging side plots involving the protagonist's friends, and found the story to offer surprising twists and an emotionally impactful ending. This debut novel is also recognized for its historical significance as the start of a long and successful career for the author.

However, the book garnered significant criticism, primarily directed at its characters and perceived flaws in writing and plot. Many reviewers expressed intense dislike for the main character, Gillian, finding her immature, irresponsible, and frustratingly blind to the problematic nature of her primary romantic interest. This male lead was frequently described as selfish, arrogant, and lacking redeeming qualities, leading to a relationship that many found to be emotionally abusive and infuriating. Critics also pointed out disjointed pacing, a sometimes convoluted storyline, and a writing style that could be described as "lousy" or marked by awkward metaphors. Additionally, the book’s dated social and cultural references from the 1970s, including certain attitudes and character behaviors, were noted as problematic or cringe-inducing by some modern readers.

Overall, this debut novel presents a polarizing experience. While some readers found it to be an emotionally engaging journey with a strong conclusion and relatable human elements, others deemed it a frustrating and poorly written experience. It appears to appeal strongly to fans of the author's later works who are interested in her origins, as well as those who enjoy dramatic, character-driven narratives that evoke strong emotional reactions, even if those emotions are sometimes anger or frustration. Readers who appreciate a fast-paced story, can overlook dated content, and are drawn to tales of a flawed protagonist's growth through challenging relationships may find something to enjoy, particularly if they are seeking a light, escapist read.
