Bernadette a disparu

The first annoying thing is, when I ask Dad what happened to Mom, he says it's not my fault. But that wasn't the question. The truth is, it all started with my perfect report card. I'd made a deal with my parents years ago: straight A's - or S's, for “Surpasses Excellence,” at my ridiculous Seattle school - and I could have anything I wanted. I didn't want a pony anymore. I wanted a family trip to Antarctica. That promise, made to a little girl, became a storm cloud that gathered over our strange, crumbling house, the former Straight Gate School for Wayward Girls. My mother, Bernadette, a woman who hadn't willingly left the house in years and considered the other school mothers “gnats,” agreed to go. For me.

Mom was a force of nature trapped in our leaky, weed-infested home. She was a brilliant architect who hadn't designed anything in twenty years, a recluse who outsourced her entire life - from scheduling appointments to ordering groceries - to a virtual assistant in India named Manjula Kapoor. She wore dark glasses even in the rain and reserved her formidable energy for epic rants about Seattle's five-way intersections and the people who inhabited it. Her biggest source of irritation was Audrey Griffin, a neighbor and fellow Galer Street parent whose organic garden was being invaded by our runaway blackberry bushes. What began as a dispute over vines quickly spiraled. There was a confrontation at school pickup, an absurd accusation that Mom ran over Audrey's foot, and an emergency room bill that landed in our mailbox. It was just one more battle in Mom's long war against the gnats, but this time, the stakes felt different.

The real disaster struck on a Saturday morning drenched in a historic downpour. While Audrey Griffin hosted a brunch for prospective parents - an event meant to elevate our school from “Subaru Parent” status to the “Mercedes Parent” elite - the hillside behind her house gave way. A river of mud, rock, and debris crashed through her home, destroying everything in its path. The only thing that stopped the deluge was a massive, ugly sign Mom had secretly had installed at the bottom of our property, facing Audrey's yard. It read: PRIVATE PROPERTY. NO TRESPASSING. GALER STREET GNATS WILL BE ARRESTED AND HAULED OFF TO GNAT JAIL. The sign that was meant to be her final, victorious taunt became a dam, saving the house from complete annihilation but cementing her reputation as a menace to society.

While Mom retreated further into her Airstream trailer in the backyard, Dad began to unravel. He'd always been a ghost in our house, lost in his work at Microsoft, where he was a tech god working on a project called Samantha 2. But now, prodded by his new admin, Soo-Lin - another one of the gnats - he started seeing Mom not as eccentric, but as dangerously unstable. His concern turned to alarm when the FBI contacted him. It turned out Manjula Kapoor wasn't a virtual assistant in India; she was a front for a Russian identity-theft ring, and Mom had handed them our entire life on a digital platter. Convinced she was a danger to herself and to us, Dad, along with the FBI and a psychiatrist from a place called Madrona Hill, planned an intervention.

They cornered her in our living room. It was an ambush of invaders: the psychiatrist, an FBI agent, a police detective, and Soo-Lin, with a pair of panties inexplicably stuck to the cuff of her jeans. They presented her with the “reality” of her situation - the scams, the hoarding of pills, the destruction of Audrey's house. They wanted to take her away, to commit her to a mental hospital while Dad and I went to Antarctica. I was at a school performance, choreographing an elephant dance for the first-graders, when I saw her standing in the doorway. She watched me for a moment, then she was gone. At home, the interventionists waited. Mom asked to use the bathroom. And then, she vanished. She slipped out a window, or through a hidden door, or into thin air. She was just gone.

I was sent away to boarding school at Choate, the place Mom had always made sound so magical. But without her, it was just a cold, lonely campus full of kids I didn't understand. I was drowning until the truth arrived in a manila envelope with no return address. Inside was everything: the FBI file, the emails between Dad and Soo-Lin, the notes between Audrey and her gardener, the article about Mom's past as a MacArthur “genius” architect whose greatest creation, the Twenty Mile House, had been cruelly destroyed. I pieced it all together, a daughter-turned-detective solving the mystery of her own mother. Audrey Griffin, the devil I thought I knew, had become an angel. She had discovered the plan for the intervention and helped Mom escape.

Just as everyone began to accept Mom was gone for good, a charge appeared on Dad's credit card from the Antarctic cruise company. She had gone without us. Dad flew to the tip of South America to meet her ship, but she had vanished again, this time in the vast, white emptiness of the ice. The official report suggested she'd been drinking and fell overboard in a storm. Everyone believed it, but I knew better. My mother was a runaway bunny, and I would find her.

Dad quit his job. He took me out of Choate. Together, we followed her path to the end of the world. On a ship slicing through black water and past blue, cathedral-like icebergs, we talked for the first time in months. I learned about his fears, about the baby he was having with Soo-Lin, and he learned that Mom hadn't been a menace, but an artist who had stopped creating. My search for clues led us to a tiny British outpost, a dead end that left me sobbing on the frozen rocks. But it was there, in that shared moment of grief, that Dad and I became a team.

We found the real clue not in a gift shop receipt, but hidden in the ship's log: a gray dotted line showing where Mom's cruise had crossed paths with a scientific research vessel, the *RV Laurence M. Gould*. A vessel now docked at Palmer Station, a place our ship was never supposed to go. We stole a Zodiac in the dead of the perpetual Antarctic daylight and sped across the icy water. I left Dad to fend off the crew and ran through the strange, silent station. And there, in a hallway that smelled of diesel and ice, I heard a voice. “You little rotter.” It was Mom. She was waiting for me, ready to start designing the new South Pole station, ready for her next vision, ready to come home.
