Dante's Comedy: Introductory Readings of Selected Cantos

Midway upon the journey of our life, one found himself lost within a dark wood, the straight way having been lost. Fear gripped him as he tried to ascend a sunlit hill, but his path was thrice blocked by a leopard, a lion, and a she-wolf, driving him back into the shadows. Just as hope began to wane, a figure appeared, a shade of the great Roman poet Virgil, sent by a blessed lady, Beatrice, from Heaven itself. Virgil declared he would guide the lost soul through the eternal realms to find his way back to God, a journey through Hell and Purgatory, before Beatrice would take over for the final ascent.

Thus began the descent into Inferno, the realm of eternal punishment, a funnel-shaped pit of nine concentric circles, each deeper and more terrible than the last. They first encountered the indifferent, forever chasing a meaningless banner, stung by wasps and gnats. Across the river Acheron, ferried by Charon, they entered Limbo, the First Circle, where virtuous pagans, including Virgil himself, resided without hope of God's light, yet free from torment. As they plunged deeper, the true horrors unfolded: the lustful swept by endless winds, the gluttonous wallowing in icy mud, the greedy and wasteful clashing with immense weights, and the wrathful eternally struggling in the Stygian marsh. Further still, within the fortified city of Dis, lay the violent, punished in rivers of boiling blood, dark woods, and burning sands, and then the fraudulent, suffering in ten ditches of torment. Finally, at the very bottom, in the frozen Ninth Circle, reserved for traitors, stood Lucifer himself, eternally chewing on Judas, Brutus, and Cassius. Dante, witnessing the fitting, often ironic, punishments for each sin, felt both repugnance and, at times, a chilling satisfaction at the suffering of his own political enemies.

Emerging from the depths of Hell on Easter Sunday morning, they found themselves on the shores of Mount Purgatory, a solitary island mountain rising towards the sky in the Southern Hemisphere. Here, souls purified themselves, assured of eventual ascent to Heaven. Under the guidance of an angel, a boat brought new penitent souls to the mountain, eager to begin their cleansing. Dante, now a participant rather than just an observer, began the arduous climb up the seven terraces, each corresponding to one of the seven deadly sins: Pride, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Avarice, Gluttony, and Lust. On each terrace, souls underwent specific penances, like the proud bent under heavy stones, the envious with their eyes sewn shut, and the avaricious lying prostrate, all the while praying and comforting one another. Virgil, though still a wise guide, had never trod these paths before, and his understanding of divine grace proved limited.

As they ascended, the burden of sin lightened, and the journey grew easier. The ancient poet Statius, recently purged of his avarice, joined them, signaling his release from Purgatory with an earthquake. Finally, they reached the Earthly Paradise, the Garden of Eden, at the summit. Here, a mystical procession unfolded, culminating in the appearance of Beatrice, radiant and glorious. Virgil, having fulfilled his role, vanished, leaving Dante with his beloved. Beatrice, embodying divine theology and grace, chastised Dante for his straying ways after her death, leading him through the rivers Lethe and Eunoë to cleanse his memory of sin and restore his virtuous past, making him ready for the celestial ascent.

Beatrice became his guide through the nine celestial spheres of Paradiso, a realm of ever-increasing light, harmony, and joy, where time and space began to dissolve. In each sphere, associated with a celestial body, Dante encountered blessed souls who appeared as points of light, their individual brilliance reflecting their closeness to God, and who imparted wisdom and insights into history, theology, and morality. From the Moon, where broken vows were atoned, to Mercury, where good deeds done for glory found their place, and Venus, where fervent lovers resided, Dante's understanding of divine love expanded.

As they soared higher, through the spheres of the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, Dante conversed with great theologians, warriors of faith, just rulers forming a giant eagle, and contemplatives ascending and descending a golden ladder. He met his ancestor Cacciaguida, who spoke of Florence's past virtues and predicted Dante's own exile, entrusting him with the mission to recount all he had witnessed. Beatrice continuously explained the intricate workings of the universe and God's providence, her beauty growing more dazzling with each ascent, reflecting Dante's increasing capacity to comprehend the divine.

In the Eighth Sphere, that of the Fixed Stars, Dante gazed back at the Earth, realizing its smallness and the pettiness of human concerns. Here, he was tested on faith, hope, and love by Saints Peter, James, and John, and conversed with Adam. They then ascended to the Primum Mobile, the Ninth Sphere, which imparted motion to all others, where Beatrice discoursed on the angelic hierarchies and the nature of creation. Finally, beyond the material spheres, they entered the Empyrean, the true Paradise, a realm of pure light and intellect where God, angels, and saints resided outside of time and space.

There, Dante drank from a river of light, his faculties fully enlightened, allowing him to perceive the divine essence. He beheld the celestial rose, a vast amphitheater of the blessed, and finally, a glimpse of the ineffable, transcendent God, a vision of three intertwined circles representing the Holy Trinity. In that instantaneous, soul-satisfying moment, he understood the unity of Christ's human and divine natures, and his will, at last, moved in perfect harmony with the divine love that moves the sun and the other stars. His extraordinary journey was complete, his soul transformed, and he was ready to tell the world of the wonders he had seen.
