On the planet Pern, where a quasi-medieval society clings to ancient traditions, a deadly threat looms, one that many have forgotten. For centuries, the skies have been clear, free from the silvery, voracious spores known as Thread, which rain down from the Red Star to devour all organic life. The magnificent, fire-breathing dragons and their telepathically bonded riders, once Pern's shield, have dwindled in number, their Weyrs mostly abandoned, and their purpose questioned by the cynical Holding Lords.

In the desolate Ruatha Hold, a young woman named Lessa endures a life of servitude, disguised as a drudge. She is the last survivor of the noble family murdered by the tyrannical Lord Fax, and for ten long years, she has nursed a quiet, burning hatred, subtly undermining her oppressor with her uncanny intelligence and latent psychic abilities. Her spirit, though cloaked in rags and grime, remains fiercely independent.

Her life of quiet vengeance shatters with the arrival of F'lar, a bronze dragonrider from the last active Weyr, Benden. He has come on a desperate "Weyr Search," seeking a woman with the rare telepathic strength to Impression the last golden queen dragon, soon to hatch. F'lar senses Lessa's hidden power, and after a swift, brutal confrontation where Fax meets his end, Lessa is swept away from her ancestral home to the ancient, cavernous Weyr.

At Benden Weyr, Lessa is thrust into a world of immense, living dragons and their proud riders. During the Hatching, in a moment of profound connection, she Impressions the newly hatched queen, Ramoth, forming an unbreakable, telepathic bond. With this bond, Lessa becomes Weyrwoman, a position of immense responsibility and power, yet she is raw, untamed, and often at odds with the Weyr's established order. As Ramoth grows with astonishing speed, Lessa begins to grasp the true, terrifying history of Thread and the monumental task that lies before them.

With Ramoth, she undertakes a perilous jump, not just days or years, but four hundred years into the past, to the height of the Dragonriders' power.
