The prophecies are being fulfilled. The legendary Horn of Valere, an artifact fabled to raise the dead heroes of the ages, has been found only to be stolen by servants of the Shadow. In pursuit of the thieves, Rand al'Thor and his friends are drawn into a desperate chase across the land. Yet Rand has a deeper struggle, for he has been proclaimed the Dragon Reborn, the champion of Light destined to face the Dark One. It is a fate he desperately seeks to escape, a power he fears will drive him mad, and a duty he cannot ignore.

As the hunt for the Horn unfolds, the world expands with new dangers and intricate politics. While Rand grapples with his unwanted destiny, his friends face their own trials, from intensive training in the White Tower of the Aes Sedai to confronting mysterious and brutal new armies invading from across the sea. The Great Hunt escalates the conflict, weaving together prophecies, political intrigue, and personal sacrifice. It is a journey that will test the bonds of friendship and force a reluctant hero to confront the terrifying power awakening within him before the Shadow consumes the world.

What other readers say

Liked

The Great Hunt is widely praised as a significant improvement over its predecessor, with many reviewers finding it superior in almost every aspect, particularly in its pacing and structure. Readers appreciated how the narrative quickly becomes more engaging after a strong opening, maintaining a compelling flow with few slow chapters. The world-building is highlighted as intricate, vast, and expanding, introducing new cultures, locations, and magical elements that contribute to the series' unique identity, moving beyond any perceived similarities to other fantasy works. Characters, including the main protagonist, are noted for gaining greater depth and undergoing satisfying, if sometimes slow, development. The plot is described as multi-faceted and full of unexpected twists, building tension effectively towards a magnificent and highly satisfying conclusion that leaves readers eager for the next installment.

Disliked

Despite its strengths, some reviewers noted a few areas for improvement. While overall pacing was better than the first book, some still found parts of the middle section to drag or felt the narrative could be overly wordy and descriptive. Certain character behaviors, particularly the main protagonist's stubbornness and reluctance to embrace his destiny, were occasionally described as repetitive or frustrating, leading to perceived "reverse character development" in some instances. Similarly, some secondary characters were felt to be underdeveloped or annoying at times, and the rapid formation of certain relationships lacked sufficient build-up for some readers. A few plot points or character actions were also seen as contrived or illogical, and the sheer volume of detail, while appreciated by many, could sometimes feel like exposition or contribute to an uneven narrative flow.

In short

Overall, The Great Hunt is considered a powerful and engaging sequel that firmly establishes the series' epic scope and unique direction. It successfully deepens the world and characters, setting a strong foundation for future volumes. This book is highly recommended for readers who enjoy expansive, detailed high fantasy series with a large cast of developing characters, intricate political intrigue, and a complex magic system. Those who may have found the first book slow or derivative are encouraged to continue, as The Great Hunt often wins over skeptics with its improved pacing, original storytelling, and a thrilling conclusion that promises much more to come.
