Here's where I stand

I was born in the small, segregated town of Monroe, North Carolina, in 1921, the son of a formidable father who served as the town's chief of police and fire department. My upbringing was steeped in patriotism, regional pride, religion, and the prevailing racial separation of the era, influences that would shape the bedrock of my beliefs for a lifetime. I showed an early aptitude for writing, which led me into journalism, working for local papers and later in radio. It was during these years, particularly as a political commentator for WRAL-TV in Raleigh, that my conservative views truly crystallized, and I began to wage a one-man war on liberalism, becoming a recognizable voice throughout eastern North Carolina.

My journey into the political arena saw me shift from the Democratic Party, which I came to view as too liberal, to the Republican Party in 1970. This transformation was deeply rooted in my opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and what I perceived as an assault on the values of my community. In 1972, I achieved an historic victory, becoming the first Republican to be elected to the U.S. Senate from North Carolina since Reconstruction. From that moment, I dedicated myself to championing core conservative causes: advocating for low taxes, staunchly opposing communism, and supporting prayer in public schools.

Throughout my five terms in the Senate, I earned the nickname "Senator No" for my unwavering commitment to conservative principles and my willingness to obstruct legislation I deemed detrimental. I saw myself as a principled leader, viewing political debate as combat, and compromise as a betrayal of deeply held convictions. My campaigns were often bruising, and I was frequently underestimated by my opponents, yet I often found ways to best them.

I held firm in my convictions on social issues, leading crusades against abortion and homosexuality, and opposing the busing of students for racial integration. Within these pages, I address my criticisms of abortion, comparing it to a holocaust, a stance I defended passionately, believing I could not remain silent about the destruction of millions of unborn children. I also delve into my record on race relations, defending my actions and challenging most of the nation's civil rights legislation. I felt that my community was under assault by a "new form of bigotry" and I simply could not stay silent. My opposition to the creation of a national holiday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., for instance, stemmed from a belief that the full extent of his advisers' associations had not been revealed.

As I rose through the ranks, I eventually became chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 1995. In this role, I fiercely advocated for an anti-communist foreign policy, often finding myself at odds with the State Department and blocking numerous presidential appointees. I supported military governments in Latin America and fought against most foreign aid programs, which I viewed as wasteful.

This memoir chronicles not just my rise to power, but also the pivotal moments and figures who shaped America during my thirty years in Washington. From my disillusionment with Richard Nixon to my respect for Ronald Reagan, whom I supported early on, and my interactions with figures like Margaret Thatcher and the Dalai Lama, these experiences offered a unique vantage point on history. It is a journey through the latter part of the American century, seen through the eyes of a conservative who steadfastly refused to yield his ground.
