What other readers say

Liked

Reviewers widely praise this book as an engaging and insightful look into the life and philosophy of Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux. Many found it to be a compelling biography, covering his childhood, youth, and the accidental yet impactful creation of the operating system. Readers enjoyed the book's honesty and the way it humanizes the legendary figure, portraying him as a relatable individual with flaws and a resilient spirit. The conversational, often amusing tone, combined with pithy technical insights and philosophical reflections, made it an addictive read for many. The book is lauded for offering a fresh perspective on the history of computing and the evolution of Linux as a global community project, with some reviewers highlighting the accuracy of Torvalds' early predictions regarding the ubiquity of Linux in various devices and industries. The translation, particularly the Persian one, also received high commendations for its fluency and readability.

Disliked

Despite the overall positive reception, some reviewers expressed reservations. A common point was that the book, first published in the early 2000s, feels somewhat outdated, especially in its later sections, which can come across as preachy or repetitive. Some parts written by the co-author were considered weak, lacking sufficient distance from the subject. While Torvalds' philosophical thoughts were found interesting, they were not universally seen as life-changing insights. A few readers also found the biographical narrative to be somewhat shallow or brief compared to other biographies. Additionally, the book's formatting, particularly the extensive use of italics, was a point of frustration for some. For those not already familiar with computing or programming, the presence of technical and "geeky" terminology, though not overwhelming, could be a minor barrier to full comprehension.

In short

Ultimately, "Just for Fun" is widely recommended as a worthwhile and enjoyable read, particularly for those with an interest in technology, open source, or the life of its iconic creator. It offers a unique blend of personal memoir, technological history, and life philosophy, revealing the motivations behind creating one of the world's most influential operating systems. The book is an absolute must-read for software engineers, programmers, and Linux enthusiasts, but its engaging narrative and insights into problem-solving, leadership, and finding satisfaction in work done "just for fun" also make it valuable for aspiring startup founders, tech-curious teenagers, and anyone looking for a different perspective on life and innovation. It stands as a testament to the power of individual passion and collaborative effort in shaping the digital world.
