After a botched robbery and a dramatic escape from authorities in Jersey, he found himself imprisoned on the Channel Islands. When the Germans invaded and occupied the islands, Chapman saw an audacious route to freedom and offered his criminal expertise to the Nazis, eagerly embracing the training in sabotage and espionage they provided in occupied France.

Upon landing in England, with a revolver, a wireless, and a cyanide pill in his possession, Chapman promptly turned himself over to the local police, who, working with MI5, were expecting him. Thus began the transformation of Fritz into Agent Zigzag, a codename reflecting his unpredictable nature. His first major act as a double agent was to fake the sabotage of the de Havilland factory. Under MI5's careful orchestration, a convincing illusion of destruction was created, complete with staged explosions and carefully placed debris. German reconnaissance planes photographed the "damage," and the Nazis, utterly convinced, celebrated their agent's success, even awarding him the Iron Cross.
