Les Survivants

The book is widely praised for its incredibly detailed and precise documentation of the harrowing 1972 Andes plane crash and the subsequent 72-day survival ordeal. Reviewers consistently highlight its compelling and gripping nature, often describing it as a "great story of survival" that reads like a novel. Many found it deeply inspirational and uplifting, showcasing the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit, courage, faith, and determination in the face of unimaginable adversity. The author is commended for his objective and fact-based approach, presenting the events in a "matter-of-fact" manner without sensationalism, which effectively immerses the reader as a "spectator and visitor" to the stranded fuselage. Its comprehensive scope extends beyond the immediate survivors, also covering the relentless efforts of their families, making it a powerful testament to human willpower and an unmissable read for many.

Despite its strengths, some readers found the book to be a challenging and at times difficult experience. Reviewers frequently note the gruesome and horrifying nature of the events depicted, describing it as "not an easy reading to digest" and "too dark" for some. While lauded for its objectivity, a few felt the narrative occasionally lacked a deeper "human touch" or emotional resonance compared to personal memoirs. Certain sections, particularly those detailing the parents' search efforts, were considered by some to be dull or to "drag on," suggesting the book could benefit from editing to tighten its pacing. Concerns were also raised about a perceived religious bias, with some feeling that the author, sharing a Catholic faith with the survivors, devoted excessive space to discussions of religion. Additionally, one reviewer pointed out that the book, written in the 70s, exhibits a somewhat dated and traditional perspective in its portrayal of gender roles.

Ultimately, "Alive" stands as a powerful and impactful account that leaves a lasting impression on its readers, prompting reflection on life, faith, and human limits. It is highly recommended as a definitive and essential read for anyone interested in true survival stories, particularly those who appreciate an unvarnished, direct presentation of facts. While not for the squeamish due to its graphic content, the book is celebrated for its ability to convey the sheer scale of the struggle and the remarkable triumph of the human will. It is a classic in its genre, offering profound lessons on perseverance and the unexpected depths of human capacity, making it a compelling experience for those prepared for its raw honesty.
