His path to becoming a ninja is fraught with failure; he struggles with even the most basic techniques at the Academy. His teacher, Iruka Umino, a man who understands loss and loneliness, sees beyond the pranks and the demon within, offering Naruto a glimmer of acceptance. This fragile bond is tested when a rogue instructor, Mizuki, manipulates Naruto into stealing the forbidden Scroll of Sealing, promising him graduation if he masters a technique from its pages. In a desperate chase, Iruka confronts Mizuki, revealing the truth of the Nine-Tails and, more importantly, affirming his belief in Naruto. With his dream now within reach, Naruto is assigned to Team 7, a classic shinobi squad. He finds himself alongside Sakura Haruno, the bright and intelligent kunoichi he adores, and Sasuke Uchiha, the brooding, prodigal ninja he views as his ultimate rival. Sakura, however, only has eyes for Sasuke, creating a dynamic of unrequited affection and simmering competition. Their eccentric, perpetually late sensei, Kakashi Hatake, presents them with their first true test: the bell test. He challenges them to steal two bells from him, declaring that those who fail will be sent back to the Academy.
