Oncle Tungstène

Reviewers widely praise Oliver Sacks' memoir for its infectious enthusiasm and lyrical prose, which makes the subject of chemistry remarkably engaging and human. Many found his personal anecdotes about a unique childhood in London during World War II, surrounded by a brilliant, scientifically-minded family, to be inspiring and fascinating. The book is lauded for its historical accuracy in describing the pioneers of chemistry and for fostering a sense of childlike curiosity and wonder about the scientific world. Readers appreciated how Sacks eloquently intertwines his personal development and challenges with his burgeoning scientific interests, demonstrating the profound influence of early experiences and supportive adults. The memoir is seen as well-written, insightful, and often charming, offering a vivid glimpse into a bygone era and the mind of a remarkable individual.

Despite its strengths, some readers found the book challenging due to its dense scientific content. A recurring criticism is that a thorough knowledge of chemistry or a strong willingness to delve deeply into the subject is almost a prerequisite for full appreciation. Many felt overwhelmed by the numerous detailed examples of experiments, chemical properties, and extensive historical accounts of elements and scientists, leading to a sense of being "too smart" for the average reader. Some reviewers found themselves skimming the more technical sections, wishing for a greater balance with personal stories. The book is not a conventional memoir, as it often prioritizes the history of chemistry over detailed personal or family narratives, leaving some questions about Sacks' life unanswered and making it less accessible for those primarily seeking an autobiography without significant scientific engagement.

Ultimately, this book is a distinctive blend of personal memoir and the history of chemistry, reflecting Oliver Sacks' profound early passion for the subject. It is highly recommended for readers who possess an existing interest in science, particularly chemistry, or those eager to explore the historical evolution of the field through a personal lens. Individuals who appreciate Sacks' unique narrative style and intellectual curiosity, and are prepared to engage with detailed scientific discussions, will find it a rewarding read. However, those looking for a light, purely biographical account or a basic introduction to chemistry without much prior knowledge may find it demanding. It is particularly suited for science enthusiasts, students, or educators who can resonate with the author's deep dive into the marvels of the chemical world.
