Por trece razones

A mysterious package arrives on Clay Jensen's porch, a shoebox filled with seven cassette tapes. His heart sinks as he recognizes the familiar handwriting on the labels - Hannah Baker's. Hannah, his classmate and crush, had taken her own life just two weeks prior, leaving behind a void and a locker adorned with tributes. Pressing play on an old Walkman, a ghost whispers into his ear: Hannah's voice, clear and haunting, explaining that he holds in his hands the reasons why she ended her life. There are thirteen sides, thirteen reasons, and he, Clay, is one of them.

Hannah's voice guides him through the first side, introducing Justin Foley, her first kiss, and the rumors he started that painted her with a reputation she didn't deserve. The tapes are a morbid game, a set of rules laid out: listen to all thirteen sides, then pass them on to the next person on her list. Clay, a quiet and generally good kid, is baffled and distraught, unable to comprehend how he could have contributed to such a devastating conclusion.

As Clay journeys through the tapes, he walks the same paths Hannah did, listening to her recount painful memories tied to various individuals. He hears of Alex Standall, who created a "hot list" that further objectified Hannah, and Jessica Davis, a friend who turned away when Hannah needed her most. Each tape side reveals another layer of betrayal, misunderstanding, and casual cruelty, slowly chipping away at Hannah's spirit. He feels her isolation, the growing weight of her despair, and the constant feeling of being watched, judged, and used.

The tapes continue, revealing the story of Tyler Down, a voyeur who stalked her, and Courtney Crimson, who exploited Hannah's vulnerability for her own social gain. Marcus Cooley, who stood her up and made an unwanted advance, further solidified her sense of worthlessness. Clay finds himself crisscrossing the town with Hannah's voice as his guide, each location a backdrop to another painful memory. He grapples with anger, confusion, and a burgeoning sense of guilt, wondering what he could have done differently.

The narrative grows darker as Hannah recounts the night of a party, where she witnessed the sexual assault of Jessica Davis by Bryce Walker, an event Justin Foley enabled. Her inability to intervene, coupled with Jenny Kurtz's reckless hit-and-run that left a stop sign down and contributed to a fatal accident, adds to her crushing burden of helplessness and complicity. Clay experiences Hannah's escalating distress firsthand, the vivid details painting a picture of a young woman slowly being consumed by her pain.

The final tapes bring Clay to Mr. Porter, the school's guidance counselor. Hannah, desperate and seeking help, confided in him about her suicidal thoughts and the sexual assault, but felt dismissed and unheard. This conversation, recorded by Hannah, becomes the final, crushing blow, the moment she believes no one truly cares enough to help her. Her voice, once full of a desperate hope, now carries the chilling certainty of her decision.

As the tapes conclude, Clay is left with the heavy weight of Hannah's story, a profound understanding of how seemingly small actions, when compounded, can lead to irreversible tragedy. He finishes listening, then carefully follows Hannah's instructions, ensuring the tapes are passed to the next person on her list. The experience leaves him profoundly changed, prompting him to reach out to another classmate, Skye Miller, who seems to carry a similar sadness, hoping to break the cycle of silence and isolation.
