Through precise observation and a restrained tone, Levi details the brutal realities of Auschwitz, exploring how individuals fought to retain their dignity and humanity in a world designed to strip it away. His work stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and serves as a vital record, urging readers to confront the atrocities of the past to prevent their recurrence.

This human (Korean edition)

Life in the Lager, as we called the camp, was a constant, gnawing battle against hunger, cold, and exhaustion. Every morning brought the same monotonous, back-breaking labor in the Buna work camp, striving to produce synthetic rubber for the German war effort. My slight stature made the heavy loads a torment, and sores on my feet never healed. We were perpetually on the brink of collapse, our bodies wasting away, our minds dulled by the ceaseless struggle for a meager ration of bread and watery soup. The camp system was designed to strip us of our humanity, to reduce us to mere cogs in a machine of destruction. Asking "why" was forbidden; there was no why.
Yet, amidst this landscape of despair, the instinct to survive flickered, sometimes fiercely, sometimes as a dim ember. I learned to navigate the complex, contradictory rules of the camp, to protect my few possessions, to barter for scraps of extra food. Luck, I realized, played an arbitrary and enormous role in who lived and who perished. A small kindness, a shared word, a moment of connection with another prisoner, could be a lifeline. I recall the precious moments when my mind, trained as a chemist, was briefly reawakened by the chance to take a chemistry exam for a possible lab position. It was a fleeting return to a world of logic and intellect, a stark contrast to the irrationality that surrounded us.
One such lifeline was Lorenzo, an Italian civilian worker who, for six months, smuggled me extra food. His simple, uncontaminated humanity, his willingness to help without expectation of reward, reminded me that I was still a man, that the world outside the barbed wire still held goodness. His actions were a testament to the enduring power of human connection, a stark contrast to the dehumanizing forces of the camp.
As the months dragged on, the war shifted. Allied forces landed in Normandy, and the Buna factory came under bombardment. In November, I was among three prisoners selected to work in the Buna laboratory, a stroke of immense fortune that shielded me from the brutal winter. Just as rumors of the approaching Russian army began to circulate, I contracted scarlet fever and was sent to the infirmary, known as Ka-Be. This illness, paradoxically, saved my life.
On January 18, 1945, the Germans, with Soviet troops advancing, began to evacuate Auschwitz, taking the able-bodied prisoners with them. My friend Alberto was among them, and I never saw him again. I, along with other sick prisoners, was left behind in the abandoned camp. For ten days, a small group of us, weak and feverish, huddled together, scavenging for food and warmth amidst the ruins. We watched the fleeing Wehrmacht, a sign that the end was truly near.
Finally, on January 27, the Soviet army entered the camp. We were liberated, but the return to humanity was not immediate. The psychological wounds ran deep. I had survived, a witness to the profound depths of human cruelty and the resilience of the spirit. The memory of what transpired within those fences, the systematic destruction of human dignity, became a burden and a sacred obligation. It is a story that demands to be told, not with hatred, but with the calm, sober language of a witness, so that such horrors may never be forgotten or repeated.

Primo Levi's memoir is widely celebrated as an exceptionally powerful and essential contribution to Holocaust literature. Readers consistently praise its unique blend of scientific precision and profound human observation, which allows for a detailed, objective, and analytical account of unimaginable horrors without resorting to hatred, rancor, or self-pity. The author's calm, sober, and precise prose is lauded for its ability to convey the sheer degradation and suffering of the concentration camp experience with disturbing yet captivating accuracy. Reviewers note the book's unflinching honesty in depicting human nature under extreme duress, exploring themes of survival, resilience, and the brutalization of the mind, making it a deeply moving and unforgettable read that ensures the atrocities are never forgotten.
Despite its many strengths, the book's distinctive style might present a minor challenge for some readers. While largely admired for its objectivity and analytical depth, this approach can occasionally be perceived as emotionally restrained or dry by those who might anticipate a more overtly passionate or vengeful narrative. Furthermore, the book's raw and unflinching portrayal of human degradation and the moral compromises necessary for survival inevitably makes for an intensely difficult and distressing experience. Although this directness is crucial to the book's impact and purpose, readers should be prepared for its harrowing and uncomfortable truths.
Overall, this is considered a landmark work and a mandatory read for anyone seeking a profound understanding of the Holocaust from an adult survivor's perspective. It particularly resonates with readers interested in human nature, psychology, and the ethical implications of extreme suffering, as well as those committed to historical remembrance and preventing future atrocities. Its analytical yet deeply affecting narrative makes it suitable for students, academics, and general readers prepared for an intense and challenging experience that prompts deep self-reflection on humanity's capacity for both cruelty and resilience. The book serves as a powerful call to remember and to actively combat fascism, racism, and any form of dehumanization.
