A chill autumn afternoon in the quiet seaside town of Crowdean is shattered for Sheila Webb, a young typist dispatched to 19 Wilbraham Crescent. The door stands ajar, an unspoken invitation, and within, in the sitting room, she discovers not her new employer, but a well-dressed man, stabbed to death. Around him, an unnerving tableau: six clocks, four of them stopped precisely at 4:13, while a cuckoo clock insists it is three o'clock. Startled, Sheila flees the scene, only to stumble into the path of Colin Lamb, a young man with an air of quiet intensity.

Colin, an agent with British Intelligence, finds himself drawn into the bizarre murder. He is, in fact, in the area on his own intricate mission, following a cryptic clue left by a dead agent: "letter M, number 61, and a sketch of a crescent moon." The police, led by Inspector Hardcastle, soon arrive at 19 Wilbraham Crescent, the home of the blind Miss Millicent Pebmarsh. Miss Pebmarsh, however, denies ever having summoned a typist, nor does she recognize the deceased or claim ownership of the peculiar collection of clocks. The victim carries no identification, and all labels have been meticulously removed from his clothing, rendering his identity a baffling enigma.

The elaborate setup at Wilbraham Crescent was a meticulously planned deception, a theatrical flourish designed to draw attention away from the real crime and its true motive. The victim, it is revealed, was an old friend of a family involved in a scheme to defraud solicitors by having a second wife impersonate the first to inherit a Canadian fortune. The clocks, the false identity, and the carefully placed witnesses were all diversions to conceal the true perpetrators and their desperate, murderous acts.

Ultimately, the intricate web of deceit is untangled, revealing a plot far more calculated than the initial chaos suggested.
