The scent of aged paper, leather, and ink was more than just an aroma for Ashlyn Greer; it was a symphony of forgotten lives, a whisper of emotions left behind. As a rare-book dealer, Ashlyn possessed a unique gift, a psychometric ability that allowed her to feel the emotional imprints, the "echoes," of previous owners within the pages she touched. This extraordinary sensitivity, a solace in a life touched by its own quiet sorrows, guided her hands through countless dusty volumes in her beloved shop, An Unlikely Story.

One day, among a collection of old books, Ashlyn's fingers brushed against two beautifully bound, yet curiously anonymous, manuscripts. A powerful surge of heartbreak and loss, interwoven with a profound love, emanated from them, drawing her in with an irresistible pull. These were no ordinary books; they were unpublished, titled "Regretting Belle" and "Forever, and Other Lies," each bearing an inscription that hinted at a deep chasm of misunderstanding and betrayal. "How, Belle? After everything…how could you do it?" read the first. The second, a defiant echo, retorted, "How??? After everything - you can ask that of me?"

As Ashlyn delved into the pages, the past unfurled in a dual narrative, transporting her to 1940s New York City. She found herself immersed in the tragic romance of Hemi and Belle, their story laid bare through their own conflicting accounts. Hemi, an English journalist, arrived in America with a hidden agenda: to investigate wealthy Americans with fascist sympathies, including Belle's powerful father. Belle, Marian Manning by her true name, was an heiress, intelligent and spirited, yet bound by societal expectations and a reluctant engagement to a man chosen for her.

Their paths crossed at Belle's engagement party, and despite the impropriety, an undeniable spark ignited between them. What began as an affair, fueled by clandestine meetings and stolen glances amidst lavish parties and cocktail hours, quickly blossomed into a profound, secret love. Hemi, whose real name was Hugh Garret, found himself genuinely falling for Marian, whom he affectionately nicknamed Belle. Marian, in turn, called him Hemi. Their love was a vibrant, desperate flame against the backdrop of a world teetering on the brink of war, complicated by Belle's family obligations and Hemi's journalistic pursuit of truth and justice.

The manuscripts revealed the intricate dance of their affair, the heady rush of forbidden passion, and the agonizing choices they faced. Hemi yearned for Belle to break off her engagement, to choose him. Belle, caught between duty and desire, struggled with the immense pressure from her family. Their dream was to elope to California, to escape the constraints that threatened to suffocate their love.

But fate, and a devastating revelation, intervened. The day before their planned elopement, Belle discovered Hemi's notes for his exposé - a shocking account of her father's antisemitic affiliations and his role in her mother's tragic death. The truth, twisted by circumstance and hidden motives, shattered Belle's trust, leaving her to believe Hemi had used her for information. The chasm between them grew, fueled by perceived betrayals and misunderstandings, tearing their love apart in a crescendo of heartbreak and regret.

Driven by the powerful echoes of love and loss, Ashlyn felt an urgent need to uncover the full truth behind Hemi and Belle's story, to bring closure to their decades-old tragedy. Her investigation led her to Ethan Hillard, the man who had unknowingly donated the mysterious manuscripts, and the grandson of Belle's sister. Together, they embarked on a journey through fragmented memories, old letters, and veiled family secrets, piecing together the true identities of the star-crossed lovers. As Ashlyn and Ethan delved deeper into the past, they found themselves confronting their own past hurts and opening their hearts to the possibility of a new beginning, their lives mirroring the themes of love, betrayal, and the enduring power of forgiveness that permeated the old books.

Readers were drawn into the decades-spanning mystery of two unpublished manuscripts that recount a tragic love story from conflicting perspectives. The writing style received accolades for its beauty, eloquence, and descriptive power, immersing readers in the story and its poignant themes of love, forgiveness, betrayal, second chances, and family secrets. Many found the book a page-turner, capable of evoking a wide range of strong emotions, from joy and inspiration to frustration and sadness, ultimately leaving them feeling deeply satisfied.

Disliked

However, not all readers shared the same enthusiasm, with several criticisms emerging. A common point of contention was the book's length, with some reviewers feeling it was too long, repetitive, or that certain storylines were unnecessarily dragged out. The central mystery and its "shocking twists" were often perceived as predictable, with many readers anticipating the reveals early in the story. Ashlyn's present-day storyline and her unique psychometric ability were occasionally deemed superfluous, with some reviewers questioning their overall impact on the plot. Character development also drew criticism, as some found the protagonists to be unlikable, immature, or inconsistent in their actions. Specific plot devices, such as the format of the "books inside the book" and certain character decisions, were noted as implausible or frustrating. Additionally, some felt the narrative attempted to tackle too many themes, leading to a sometimes messy or unfocused feel, and wished for more emphasis on the "bookish" elements rather than the romance.

In short

Overall, "The Echo of Old Books" appears to be a polarizing but generally well-received novel that deeply resonates with its target audience. While some readers experienced a disconnect with the pacing and character choices, many others were completely engrossed by its emotional depth and intricate plot. This book is likely to be cherished by those who enjoy rich, descriptive prose, stories with dual timelines, and a central mystery that unfolds through historical narratives. It is particularly recommended for readers who appreciate deeply emotional love stories, whether forbidden or second-chance romances, and those who are fascinated by the magic and power of books themselves. Fans of family sagas and narratives exploring themes of healing, reconciliation, and the enduring impact of the past will also find much to appreciate in this layered tale.
