What other readers say
Liked
Many readers found this debut novel to be a generally entertaining and worthwhile experience, appreciating its vivid depiction of small-town life and the colorful characters that populate it. The story is often praised for its core premise of a crusading journalist taking on local political corruption and vigilante violence, with some reviewers finding the plot intricate yet easy to follow, ultimately leading to a satisfying and uplifting conclusion. Passages detailing the historical period were highlighted as offering a compelling "snapshot" of a transitional era, imbued with an evident affection for Midwestern country life. Despite an initial slowness, many felt the narrative significantly improved in its latter half, with the prose described as amazing and the overall writing as excellent. The book is also noted for introducing themes and settings that would recur in the author's more celebrated later works.
Disliked
Conversely, a frequent criticism targets the book's writing style, which many perceived as dated, wordy, overly florid, or meandering, characterized by "backed-in sentences" that made it challenging to engage with or follow the narrative. Some reviewers found the prose "grossly overwritten" or burdened by "excessive sentiment." The plot itself was sometimes described as flimsy, simple, or disjointed, with key events occasionally referenced rather than fully dramatized, leading to a sense that the story loses focus or drags at certain points. The romantic subplot, in particular, was a point of contention for several readers who found it "turgid," overly sentimental, and a distraction from the main story. While the novel tackles important social issues, some critics felt the author displayed a limited understanding of economically disadvantaged characters, and noted that the portrayal of certain minority characters includes terms now considered offensive. Compared to the author's later, award-winning novels, this first effort is often seen as less refined, more melodramatic, and somewhat lacking in character depth.
In short
Overall, "The Gentleman from Indiana" is considered a decent, though imperfect, first novel that provides valuable insight into the early development of a notable American writer. While its dated style and sentimentality may not appeal to all contemporary tastes, it offers a good read for those interested in observing an author's progression over time. This book is particularly recommended for readers who enjoy classic literature from a more idealistic era, evoking the spirit of old-fashioned stories where integrity and community triumph over corruption. It will likely resonate with those who appreciate historical context, pastoral descriptions, and narratives that celebrate a simpler time, provided they are willing to engage with a more elaborate and leisurely narrative style.
