Petit Gruffalo

Further into the wood, a wise Owl swooped down, suggesting tea in his treetop house. Again, the quick-wwitted mouse politely declined, explaining he was meeting a Gruffalo. "A Gruffalo?" hooted the Owl, eyes wide with alarm. The mouse reiterated the fearsome description, adding details of the Gruffalo's orange eyes, black tongue, and a purple prickle all over his back. He then casually mentioned that the Gruffalo was rather fond of scrambled owl. With a terrified squawk, the Owl flapped away, leaving the little mouse feeling quite pleased with his invention.
Next, a slithery Snake coiled from a log, inviting the mouse to a feast in his logpile house. Once more, the mouse conjured his imaginary friend, the Gruffalo. "A Gruffalo?" hissed the Snake, recoiling slightly. The mouse painted a vivid picture of the creature's terrible tusks, terrible claws, and terrible teeth, emphasizing that the Gruffalo's favorite meal was- you guessed it- snake surprise! The Snake, with a fearful slither, vanished into the undergrowth, and the mouse chuckled, confident in his cleverness.
But then, a rumbling sound, a crunching of leaves, and a shadow fell. Out of the darkest part of the wood lumbered a creature with terrible tusks, and terrible claws, and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws! He had knobbly knees, turned-out toes, and a poisonous wart on the end of his nose. His eyes were orange, his tongue was black, and he had a purple prickle all over his back. It was a real Gruffalo! The Gruffalo, with a hungry grin, declared that he was going to eat the mouse, for "Gruffalo crumble!"
Though momentarily stunned, the tiny mouse quickly regained his composure. He boldly announced that he was, in fact, the scariest creature in the deep, dark wood, and all the animals were afraid of him. "Just follow me," he squeaked, "and you'll soon see." The Gruffalo, intrigued and a little skeptical, agreed to follow. As they walked, they encountered the Snake, who, upon seeing the Gruffalo, instantly fled in terror. "You see?" said the mouse. "I told you so. He's scared of me!"
They continued their stroll, and soon the Owl appeared, only to take one look at the towering Gruffalo and fly off in a panic. "There goes the Owl," chirped the mouse, "frightened of me!" The Gruffalo, though still somewhat confused, began to wonder if there was some truth to the mouse's claims. Finally, they came across the Fox, who, seeing the monstrous Gruffalo trailing the tiny mouse, bolted away without a second glance.
The Gruffalo watched them all disappear into the distance, a flicker of fear beginning to stir within him. The mouse, seeing his plan unfold perfectly, then declared that his tummy was starting to rumble, and his favorite food was Gruffalo. The enormous Gruffalo, now utterly convinced of the mouse's terrifying reputation, turned tail and fled into the deep, dark wood, leaving the little mouse to find a nut and enjoy his quiet, peaceful lunch.

Rating Sources
Reviewers widely praise this book as a delightful and engaging read, frequently highlighted for its exceptional rhyme and meter. Many describe the language as marvelously tight, deceptively effortless, and perfectly suited for reading aloud, even allowing for a melodic, sing-song cadence. The storytelling is consistently lauded as clever, ingenious, and well-structured, inviting both laughter and a sense of playful suspense. Axel Scheffler's illustrations are celebrated for their charm, expressiveness, and ability to bring the characters and settings to life, making the visual experience as enjoyable as the narrative. The book's capacity to hold up under multiple readings and its status as an award-winning modern classic, translated into numerous languages, underscore its broad appeal and enduring quality.
While overwhelmingly positive, a few reviewers note that the book is not overly complex or lengthy, and some suggest it may not be deeply ethically enriching in a profound sense, though they often qualify this by stating that not all books need to be. Regarding the artwork, a couple of critics, while acknowledging its appeal, found the illustrations to be a "touch generic" or "not uniquely outstanding" compared to other renowned children's illustrators, preferring a different artistic style. However, these points are minor in the context of the overall enthusiastic reception.
The Gruffalo is considered a cherished classic, highly recommended for families and a staple in many children's libraries. It is particularly suitable for young readers, typically between three and seven years old, making it an ideal bedtime story or a fun shared reading experience. Adults also appreciate its cleverness and humor, often finding themselves chuckling along. Beyond entertainment, the book is valued for its underlying messages, subtly teaching children about bravery, the power of wit over brawn, problem-solving, overcoming fear, and the importance of not judging others based on outward appearance. It encourages innovative thinking and is seen as a wonderful gift or an excellent first book for those beginning to read.
