The Queen of Nothing

The biting chill of the mortal world clung to Jude, a stark contrast to the glittering, treacherous warmth of Elfhame she'd been so abruptly cast from. After being crowned Queen of Faerie, only to be exiled by the very king she'd bound to her will, Cardan, she found herself unmoored, a queen of nothing. Days were spent with Vivi and Oak, watching the mundane flicker of human television, and nights often involved odd jobs for fae who lingered in the mortal realm, like convincing a cannibalistic redcap to cease its gruesome hunts. The sting of Cardan's betrayal was a constant ache, yet a part of her still yearned for the world she'd fought so fiercely to control.

Then, a shadow from her past arrived: her twin sister, Taryn, bearing a plea for help. Taryn, ever the unpredictable one, had murdered her husband, Locke, and needed Jude to impersonate her during the inquest, a task made possible by Jude's mortal immunity to enchantments that forced truth. The request was a dangerous lure, a direct path back to the Faerie Court and the king who had so carelessly broken her. Despite the peril, Jude's obligation to her family, and perhaps a deeper, unacknowledged hunger for the power she'd lost, compelled her to agree.

Disguised as Taryn, Jude stepped back into Elfhame, the air thick with magic and suspicion. The court was a viper's nest, every glance a potential threat, every whisper a possible plot. She moved through the familiar halls, playing the part of her demure sister while her keen eyes and sharper mind absorbed every detail. It soon became clear that Elfhame was on the brink of war. Her adoptive father, Madoc, ever the master strategist, was rallying the Court of Teeth, intent on seizing the throne for himself, or for Oak, through bloodshed.

Her carefully constructed disguise, however, could not hide her from Cardan. Their reunion was charged, a dance of veiled barbs and undeniable tension. He was as infuriatingly beautiful and unpredictable as ever, his eyes, dark as night, seeming to see through Taryn's facade to the warrior queen beneath. The truth of her exile began to unravel; Cardan's decree had been a clever ploy, a loophole woven into the magic allowing her to return when "the crown allowed it," and Jude herself was the crown. He had sent letters, countless pleas for her return, all intercepted by his scheming mother, Lady Asha.

As war loomed, Jude found herself caught in the bloody politics, navigating betrayals from unexpected corners. The conflict with Madoc escalated, culminating in a parlay before battle. In a dramatic gesture, Cardan shattered his own crown, a symbolic end to the old ways of power-lust, and a fulfillment of a prophecy that he would be the ruination of the throne, but also that from his blood, a great ruler would rise.

The true nature of Cardan's curse was revealed – he was to be transformed into a great serpent, a creature of destruction. Jude, with her mortal wit and unwavering resolve, refused to let him face this monstrous fate alone. She fought not just for Elfhame, but for him, to break the curse and prove that love could exist without control, that vulnerability could be a strength. It was a perilous journey, demanding sacrifices and alliances with unlikely figures, including the formidable Grima Mog, whom Jude had previously bested in a rooftop duel.

In the climactic confrontation, as Cardan, now a magnificent serpent, ravaged the land, Jude made a desperate choice. She offered herself, her mortal blood, to the land and to the beast, trusting in a deeper magic, a bond forged in fire and hate that had blossomed into something resembling love. Flowers bloomed from her blood, and the land recognized her, a mortal, as its true queen.

With the curse broken and Cardan restored, though forever changed, they stood together. He publicly acknowledged Jude as his High Queen and wife, quelling dissent and cementing their rule. Madoc was spared but exiled to the mortal world, forbidden from ever wielding a weapon again, joined by Oriana and Oak. Jude and Cardan, now united in their power, began a new era for Elfhame, their partnership marking the end of their power struggles and the beginning of a reign built on fierce love and hard-won equality. Their journey had taught them that true power lay not in control, but in the willingness to sacrifice for what they loved.
