Through the Looking Glass (and What Alice Found There) Annotated

One quiet, snowy afternoon, a young girl named Alice found herself musing about the world beyond the looking-glass, the shimmering surface above the mantelpiece. She imagined stepping through it, into a house that was just like her own, yet wonderfully reversed. With a playful push, she found herself not merely imagining, but truly passing through the glass, landing softly in a mirrored room where the clock ran backward and the chess pieces stood alive and conversing by the fireplace.

Her journey through this fantastical, inverted land began as a game of chess, where she was but a pawn, destined to reach the eighth square and become a Queen. Her first steps led her into a garden of talking flowers, who, with their blunt and sometimes rude opinions, offered a glimpse into the peculiar logic of this world. Soon after, she found herself whisked away on a train, a bewildering ride where the passengers were as strange as the scenery, until she disembarked in a forest.

In this wood, she encountered a Gnat, a tiny creature who enlightened her about the curious insects of the Looking-Glass world. Further on, she stumbled into a part of the forest where names were forgotten, a place of profound loneliness. Here, she met a Fawn, and for a brief, innocent time, they wandered together, neither recalling their identities nor the natural fear between them, until they emerged from the wood, and memory, with its stark distinctions, returned, causing the Fawn to flee.

Her path then led her to the quarrelsome twins, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, who insisted she was merely a character in the sleeping Red King's dream, a notion that brought tears to her eyes. They recited the melancholic tale of "The Walrus and the Carpenter" before being frightened away by a monstrous crow. Next, the White Queen appeared, a flustered, disheveled figure who explained the peculiar advantages of living backward, where memories precede events.

Alice continued her journey across the chessboard landscape, encountering the imperious Humpty Dumpty, who delighted in riddles and the arbitrary meanings of words, and a fierce battle between a Lion and a Unicorn. She narrowly escaped a Red Knight, only to be rescued by the kindly, if clumsy, White Knight, a figure of gentle eccentricity who sang her a song of his own invention and shared his ingenious, if impractical, contraptions.

Finally, after numerous bewildering encounters and a series of moves across the squares, Alice reached the eighth square and, with a sudden, dizzying transformation, found a crown upon her head. She was Queen Alice. A grand celebration, a feast of talking food, was held in her honor, but the chaos and nonsensical pronouncements of the Red and White Queens, who both appeared beside her, grew overwhelming.

The entire feast dissolved into pandemonium, the guests and dishes swirling into a confused blur. Overwhelmed and frustrated, Alice seized the Red Queen, shaking her until the Queen began to shrink, transforming into a small, familiar kitten. With a jolt, Alice found herself back in her armchair, her own kitten, Kitty, in her lap, the looking-glass world receding like a dream. She recounted her adventure to her cats, wondering if it had been her dream, or if she had, in fact, been a part of the Red King's.
