The formidable Magisterium, having learned of a prophecy naming Lyra as a second Eve, believes her existence threatens their dominion and dispatches forces, including the zealous Father Gomez, to eliminate her. Father Gomez is set to follow Mary Malone, an ex-nun and scientist whose path is destined to intersect with Lyra's. Dr. Malone, in her own journey, finds herself in a world inhabited by the mulefa, sentient creatures with unique perceptions, and constructs an amber spyglass, a device that allows her to perceive the dwindling, life-giving substance known as Dust. She begins to understand the profound connection between Dust, consciousness, and the very fabric of existence.
Will, guided by his unwavering resolve, eventually locates Lyra in the cave, but their escape is fraught with danger. The Subtle Knife, a blade capable of severing the very fabric of reality, shatters in a moment of distraction caused by Mrs. Coulter. Fortunately, the armored bear-king Iorek Byrnison, a staunch ally, skillfully repairs the ancient weapon, allowing Will and Lyra to continue their perilous journey. Their path leads them into the Land of the Dead, a desolate realm where the souls of the deceased are tormented by harpies. Here, Lyra and Will make a profound bargain with the harpies: true stories of lives lived in exchange for safe passage for the dead. This act allows countless souls, including Roger's, to finally dissolve peacefully into the universe, their atoms rejoining the cosmos.
As Lyra and Will navigate their own intertwined destinies, the cosmic war rages between Lord Asriel's forces, allied with witches, rebel angels, and other beings from across the multiverse, and the tyrannical armies of the Authority, led by the formidable Archangel Metatron. Mrs. Coulter, a figure of complex loyalties, infiltrates the Authority's citadel, orchestrating a cunning betrayal of Metatron. In a cataclysmic confrontation, Asriel, Mrs. Coulter, and Metatron are all consumed by an abyss, bringing an end to their titanic struggle. Lyra and Will, in the midst of this chaos, discover the Authority himself, ancient and feeble, imprisoned within a crystal litter. Upon his release, he dissolves into the wind, a powerless, forgotten entity.
Escaping to the mulefa world, Lyra and Will find Mary Malone, who shares her revelations about love and consciousness, deepening their understanding of their own burgeoning feelings. In this vibrant new world, they experience their first tender moments of love, a profound connection that transcends their individual origins. Yet, a harsh truth emerges: to prevent the continued escape of Dust and the creation of spectres, all windows between worlds must be sealed, save for the one leading from the Land of the Dead. This revelation means Lyra and Will, each belonging to their own universe, can never truly be together.
With heavy hearts, Lyra and Will accept their fate. They make a solemn promise to meet each Midsummer's Day on a specific bench in their respective Oxford Botanic Gardens, a silent testament to their enduring love across the impossible divide. Will, in a final act of closure, shatters the Subtle Knife, ensuring no more dangerous portals can be opened. Lyra, though she loses her intuitive ability to read the alethiometer, resolves to study it academically, dedicating herself to building the Republic of Heaven in her own world, a future shaped by understanding and freedom.

The Amber Spyglass, the concluding volume in the His Dark Materials trilogy, garners praise for its ambitious scope, imaginative world-building, and frequently engaging prose. Many readers found themselves deeply invested in the main characters, Lyra and Will, along with the unique concept of daemons. The book is often lauded for its intellectual depth, engaging in a sophisticated dialogue with classic literature and exploring complex spiritual and philosophical themes. Despite its more serious tone compared to earlier installments, it is described as powerful, emotionally moving, and capable of presenting a hopeful vision for humanity centered on curiosity, diversity, and a connection to the natural world.
However, a significant number of reviewers expressed disappointment, finding the book to be a letdown from its predecessors. Common criticisms include an overabundance of new characters and tangential plotlines that sometimes diluted the main narrative. Many felt that Lyra's character regressed, becoming subservient, and found the redemption arcs for certain key figures unconvincing or inconsistent. The theological arguments were frequently criticized as heavy-handed, one-sided, and poorly developed, with some readers feeling the author prioritized personal polemic over storytelling. Specific plot elements, such as the motivations for supporting characters or the intense romance between the young protagonists, were deemed unbelievable or contrived. The ending, in particular, often left readers unsatisfied, described as predictable, forced, and sacrificing logical narrative progression for allegorical purposes.
Ultimately, The Amber Spyglass is a polarizing conclusion to the trilogy. It is likely to appeal to readers who appreciate ambitious, thought-provoking fantasy that delves deeply into philosophical and spiritual questions, particularly those interested in an alternative interpretation of traditional religious narratives. However, readers seeking a more straightforward adventure with consistent character development and a less overt authorial voice may find it a frustrating and less fulfilling experience, with some recommending stopping after the first book.
