Benjamin Franklin, with his maxims like "Time is money" and his exhortation to frugality and hard work as virtues, perfectly encapsulates this spirit. His advice, though seemingly pragmatic, carries the weight of a moral sermon, a stark contrast to the traditional view where working was merely a means to live, not an unending, virtuous quest for accumulation.

To understand the origins of this unique spirit, one must turn to the ethics of ascetic Protestantism, especially Calvinism. The Protestant Reformation introduced the concept of a "calling" (Beruf), transforming worldly activity into a religiously significant endeavor. While Luther introduced the idea of fulfilling one's duty in one's earthly station, it was Calvinism that truly provided the psychological impetus for the methodical accumulation of wealth. The doctrine of predestination, which held that God had already chosen who was saved and who was damned, created an intense anxiety among believers.

Since divine favor was unknowable directly, Calvinists sought "proof" of their election in their worldly success. Over time, this religiously motivated ethic, initially driven by the profound spiritual concerns of salvation, gradually became secularized. The capitalist system, once nurtured by these religious roots, evolved to a point where it no longer required its original spiritual underpinnings.
