A curious observation unfolds across various nations: a distinct correlation exists between religious affiliation and economic success. In societies with diverse Christian denominations, Protestants, particularly Calvinists, are often found disproportionately among business leaders, skilled laborers, and those accumulating significant capital, while Catholics tend to lag behind. This stratification suggests something more profound than mere historical circumstance; it hints at differing "mental characteristics" fostered by distinct belief systems.

The "spirit of capitalism" is not simply a boundless greed for wealth, which has existed across all epochs. Instead, it embodies a peculiar ethos: the relentless, rational pursuit of profit as an end in itself, a moral duty to increase one's capital through diligent labor. Benjamin Franklin, with his maxims like "Time is money" and his exhortation to frugality and hard work as virtues, perfectly encapsulates this spirit. To understand the origins of this unique spirit, one must turn to the ethics of ascetic Protestantism, especially Calvinism. Across these groups, the emphasis on diligent work, honesty, and the reinvestment of profits, rather than their consumption, fostered an environment conducive to the growth of capital. Over time, this religiously motivated ethic, initially driven by the profound spiritual concerns of salvation, gradually became secularized. The capitalist system, once nurtured by these religious roots, evolved to a point where it no longer required its original spiritual underpinnings.
